These people despite the downfall of their empire about 4 hundred years prior to the story echo into the current time line of the story as even now their presence in felt in much of Planetos. The roads that are used for much of the travel in Essos were built by them. The free cities were all founded directly or as a result of them. But the main part they still play is the mere existence of the kingdom the story takes place in. Everyone in Planetos weather they know it or not live in the aftermath of the Valyrian freehold in some way or another. So where did this idea come from?
Numenor
in the year 32 of the second age the island of Numenor was raised from the sea by the Valar to reward the race of men for their aid in the fight against Morgoth. Numenor is among all the comparisons i’ve seen the least talked about, which is in my opinion strange. The Numenorians were much like the Valyrians expansive even though many civilizations are so, they were known for their superior transport, the Numenoreans with their superior naval transport and the Valyrians with their dragons. On top of that they both broke apart and sank beneath the sea. And their successors migrated to the a different land where they established a kingdom, and in the kingdom the Numenoreans most of the lord of the rings takes place, said kindom being Gondor(and Arnor which has fallen), and like i said earlier the kingdom the Valyrian successors establishes, Westeros that is, Is where most of a song if ice and fire takes place. Last point is the fact that both the Numenoreans and Valyrians are rather arrogant people. Viewing themselves as gods.
Atlantis
The year 360 BCE the Athenian philosopher Plato wrote of a superpower that existed on a continent in the Atlantic ocean about 9 thousand years BCE. Obviously he didn’t use BCE but you know what i mean. He claimed that the founders of this civilization were half gods and half humans, and that the continent because the Atlanteans pissed off the gods broke apart and sank beneath the ocean. Like he Valyrian Peninsula. They were such an advanced civilization that even the gods feared them, which i mean the Valyrians viewed themselves that way. Most of all though both of these were viewed as mythical states, by the people who believed Atlantis existed, and by the people in Planetos. You get it by now.

One of them died and their village was called Rome after what i can only assume was the name of the one who won. This village would grow however into a city. A highly irrelevant one at that but still a city. So let’s look at how the Valyrians were in their start. Well they were humble sheep farmers who had absolutely no impact on the rest of the world yet. Mean while around this time the big players were the Egyptians, Mesopotamians and Greeks and later the Phoenicians. However fast forward to the year 264 BCE Romans and the Phoenician colony of Carthage began the first in series of wars called the punic wars. At this point the romans held all of Italy. Ok so meanwhile in Planetos 5000 years BC the Valyrians and the old empire of Ghis start their first in a series of wars called the Ghiscari wars. The results of both of these series’s of war is the what was in the start the underdog ruling he territory the other side ruled. Rather similar imo. Different point that imo makes these two very similar. Even to this day the echo of Rome can be heard. The Romans built a vast road network which is still used to this day. Which is similar the Valyrian roads. But yea. There are more similarities but gotta move on now.
